Offcut: the bright, graphic art museum theme for Astro

Offcut is a theme for contemporary art museums, galleries and collections where the work does the talking. A warm white page, huge italic serif headlines, one strong red and works set large on empty space, with a moving hero on every page.

Why Offcut

  • Exhibitions split into now on, coming up and past, worked out from their dates
  • Events for talks, tours, workshops, lates and family days, with rooms, times, prices and places
  • The collection with every work’s artist, medium, size, accession number and its age (“Made 2022, 4 years ago”)
  • Artists with portraits, bios and their works in the collection
  • A shop of prints, posters and editions, each linked to a work, with a members’ price
  • Visit, membership, learning, support us and jobs pages, with opening hours that mark today
  • A journal with author portraits, legal pages and two large menus for what’s on and the collection
  • SEO-ready with Astro SEO, Sitemap, and RSS

Layout & Structure

Every page opens on a full screen hero with its own idea: a walk down a gallery hall, a year of works circling the title, works hanging on wires, stamps you can click, prints on drying lines. Below it, works and labels sit on lots of empty ground, and facts are plain ruled rows with red labels.

Style & colour

A warm white ground, near black type and one strong red, with Instrument Serif and Instrument Sans. Every colour is a token, so making it yours is a few lines of CSS.

What you get

  • Astro v7 + Tailwind CSS v4 setup
  • Content collections for exhibitions, events, works, artists, journal, shop and legal pages
  • GSAP and Lenis motion that switches off for reduced motion
  • Reusable sections, a style guide under /system and an AI design skill for Cursor, Claude Code and Codex
  • Ongoing theme updates

Offcut is also available with Sanity CMS (Sanity Studio + monorepo) or EmDash CMS (built-in admin, Cloudflare deploy) for teams that need a visual editor without giving up Astro performance.

Thanks to Michael adapting Enlightr to Sanity CMS, I was able to create Madrid Landing Kit. I’m amazed by the simplicity and beauty of every Lexington theme.
